The Sonic Rumble closed beta test recently ended and the reception is generally positive, but there are still a few complaints.
Sonic Rumble is a free to play competitive multiplayer mobile game, race against 32 other players to get the most rings in maps from locations set across locations from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
The reception of Sonic Rumble has been quite good, many players have been wanting to go back to play it, and the amount of content in it is perfect for a mobile game you can pick up and play. The game features references to many past Sonic games, with costumes from The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Riders, and characters from Sonic Lost World, this game is a love letter to Sonic fans. As a clone of Fall Guys, Sonic Rumble is a much better experience than I was expecting, with a lot of content. In the beta there was a small selection of stages featuring unique gimmicks that are from many different games. Green Hill from Sonic 1, Chemical Plant from Sonic 2, Seaside Hill from Sonic Heroes, Starlight Carnival from Sonic Colors, Frozen Factory, and Lava Reef from Sonic Lost World.
Each game is split up into three rounds, the first round is a run round, the second is either a survival, team, or hunt round, and the third is always a ring battle. The run round is a race to the finish line as fast as possible, only the first 16 to pass the finish line qualify for round 2, you receive a bonus for placing in a higher place, up to a thousand rings. In the survival round, it is a battle to survive as long as possible, once 8 players are eliminated, the round ends. During the team round, players are placed on one of two teams, and the first team to reach a specific score wins, or the team with the most points. In the hunt round players try to get the most points to be in the top 8 to qualify for the last round. During the ring battle round, all the players are placed in an arena with different obstacles, from rising lava to snow. The player with the most rings at the end of the timer wins the game.
Overall, Sonic Rumble is a great game, with many opportunities to improve, featuring a season pass that has a lot of potential. While the game in the state beta testers played was fun, there are many ways that Sonic Rumble could become a microtransaction heavy game that fails to entertain people. Hopefully that does not end up happening, but only time will tell.
